School Update

Hey, friends:
Thought I'd update you on the school a little bit. I have been teaching the Gospel of John for about 3 hours every day (starting September 11th). Yesterday I gave the students a test over John 1-11. It was 10 pages long, plus they had to write out their memory verses. (Those verses are John 20:30-31, John 1:1-5, John 1:9-14, John 1:29-34, John 3:1-5 and John 3:16-19). The questions were fill in the blank or essay type questions. All the students did well. (Maybe the teaching was great or maybe they studied hard.) It also probably means I did not expect enough of them. That will change.

October 1st we added an Old Testament overview/basics class. It's held in the afternoon and taught by Tawn, my Khmer co-worker. It only goes an hour and a half, but is needed by several of the students. Many stories that we take for granted, these men do not know.

George Carman is coming at the end of October to teach Hebrews in the morning class. That will allow me to focus on my language studies more and to work organizing things better. At that time, we plan to expand the afternoon class. Tawn hopes to teach "the Teachings of Jesus." That will also be a 2-3 hour class. Our students will be challenged more.
Just so you know, they also take turns leading our chapel each day. And, they rotate going out to villages to preach each weekend.

We also have been blessed at the school. Between Sunset and the North Heights congregations (North Heights in Batesville, Arkansas oversees the school), we have been able to buy a copier/printer and a desk-top computer for the school. Also, through the generosity of North Heights, we now have air conditioning in the classroom! (That was an adventure to get put in. First, the units, which are like a hotel unit, had to be moved into the room and installed. Then we had to get a door built in one doorway so that the air would not go to the whole building. The first day, one unit worked but the other didn't. After 3 days of repairing it, the A/C man just replaced that unit with another used one that he had. Since then, it's been nice!). And, we would not have been able to do this, but North Heights also increased their support in order for us to pay the higher electric bill.

The students here are talented and have good hearts. They are younger Christians and are still growing in their faith. But, I can see that they can do great things for the Kingdom. Please pray for them often. We hope to include more pictures of them in the future.

We are so glad that you have such good students and that they can go out and preach Christ to the areas in the country. We will indeed pray for them that they will continue in the Lord and help advance the cause of Christ there.

It is so strange that we Americans take so much for granted such as a comfortable place to study and learn. We are happy for you that the congregation in Arkansas saw your need and is doing something about it including more for money for the electricity.

May God bless and keep you all, Bob and Carol A.
